Abstract

Generative AI tools such as Midjourney, Adobe Firefly, and DALL-E are changing how graphic designers work and putting pressure on how they see themselves professionally. Prior research has looked at GenAI’s technical capabilities, its effects on creative industries broadly, copyright questions, and design pedagogy, usually one at a time; few studies connect these threads to ask what GenAI means for graphic designers’ professional identity specifically, and that is the gap this review addresses. The review draws on 33 peer reviewed sources published between 2021 and 2026, from design studies, human computer interaction, organizational psychology, and legal scholarship, located through keyword searches of Consensus, Semantic Scholar, Google Scholar, and the ACM Digital Library. Sources were grouped around three areas, authorship and creative ownership, skill acquisition, and career prospects, and read against functional identity theory, professional role identity research, and work on human AI collaboration. Out of this comes a typology of three ways designers respond to GenAI: Resisters, Adapters, and Integrators, running from human centered to AI centered practice. GenAI unsettles familiar ideas about authorship, expertise, and creative ownership, and speeds up changes already underway in design workflows. Early career designers appear to face a higher risk of skill loss than experienced ones, who tend to treat GenAI as a complement to their existing competencies rather than a replacement for them. The typology extends functional identity and professional role identity theory into the creative professions, giving other researchers something concrete to test. It should also help in practice: design educators can use it to build GenAI literacy and skill retention into curricula, and designers and professional associations can use it to think through positioning, ethical concerns, and copyright as generative AI becomes part of everyday practice.
