Dropping Out of Medical Schools Among Generation Z Students in Region Xi

Student attrition is a growing problem in medical education, especially among Generation Z students who have different experiences and expectations than previous cohorts. This study explored the lived experiences of Generation Z medical students who dropped out of some private medical schools in Davao City, Philippines. The increasing concern over student attrition led the study to evaluate students’ reasons for going to medical school, their lived experiences, the challenges they experienced, and their thoughts on how to improve retention. A qualitative multiple case study technique was used and comprised six former first- and second-year medical students selected from three medical schools using purposive sampling. Data were acquired using a participant profile and extensive interviews and were analyzed thematically both within and between cases. The results suggested that motivations varied from an internal calling and family influence to external pressure and social conformity. Institutional compassion and help were evident; however, participants reported considerable fatigue, mental health problems, academic workload, economic difficulties, and lack of social support. The process of re-evaluation of identity became significant, which caused students to rethink their position in the medical profession. The study found that the attrition of medical students is influenced by a combination of academic, psychological, and environmental factors. A more just academic load, better support systems in educational institutions, and active mental health care are recommended. These findings suggest that medical education should be more accommodating and supportive in an effort to retain Generation Z students in academic environments.
