Abstract

This qualitative study using a phenomenological approach explored the lived experiences, survival strategies, and aspirations of street food vendors in Kalibo, Aklan, providing a basis for policy frameworks and economic planning. Sixteen participants were purposively selected based on established inclusion criteria, ensuring rich and relevant insights. Data were collected through an in-depth interview and analyzed using the thematic analysis framework of Braun and Clarke (2006). Findings indicate that, in terms of their lived experiences, vendors cope with economic challenges, daily concerns and struggles, family life and responsibilities, physical and emotional experiences, and sources of inspiration and motivation, which collectively shape their day-to-day survival and resilience in street vending. Street food vendors’ survival strategies manage financial adaptation, resourcefulness in business operations, and social and informal dynamics.  Vendors’ aspirations encompassed not only economic stability and business growth but also family-centered aspirations, aspirations for stability, and improved quality of life. The study underscores the need for multidimensional interventions ranging from securing permanent vending space, conflict with the authorities, financial literacy, and skill development to social support, like event-driven income opportunities that strengthen both the economic and well-being of the street food vendors. This multidimensional support framework for street food vendors may enhance resilience, promote inclusive urban development, and support long-term livelihood sustainability in Kalibo, Aklan.
