Abstract

Financial literacy matters for financial well-being; however, findings on whether adolescent exposure to financial education is associated with financial resilience in adulthood remain mixed. This study examines the impact of exposure to state-mandated high school personal finance education on financial resilience in adulthood. The sample consists of respondents from Tennessee, Utah, Missouri, and Virginia, from five waves of the National Financial Capability Study (2012–2024). We used a difference-in-differences approach to examine the effect of personal finance mandates, while controlling for differences across states and years, demographic characteristics, and survey weights. We found that exposure to the mandate was associated with a 0.374-point lower score on the four-point financial-resilience measure (p < 0.001), indicating greater self-reported confidence in covering an unexpected $2,000 expense. The results remain similar across different models, treatment definitions, sample restrictions, weighting schemes, and other robustness checks. A placebo test finds no statistically significant association between exposure and resilience before the mandate. These findings suggest that exposure to a state-mandated financial education while attending high school is associated with modest but meaningful improvements in financial resilience in immediate adulthood. Given the nonexperimental research design and the inclusion of only four states, the findings should be interpreted as associations rather than causal relationships.
