Boko Haram, Economic Development, Insurgency, Insecurity EconomyAbstract
Boko Haram Insurgency has constituted a serious predicament to the Nigerian state since its emergence in 2002. The sophistication and fluidity of the insurgent group within the North east geopolitical zone of Nigeria has made the group one of the greatest challenge to Nigerian socio economic and political landscape. Based on the above, this research work examined the effect of Boko Haram insurgency on the economic development of Northeastern Nigeria. The specific objectives were to investigate how insurgency affected infrastructural development in northeastern Nigeria, ascertain how insurgency affected agricultural production in northeastern Nigeria, and determine how insurgency affected gross domestic product in northeastern Nigeria. The study adopted the Frustration–Aggression Theory and the Poverty Theory for its theoretical framework. The research work adopted a qualitative descriptive method. Content analysis method was adopted to merge available relevant information from reliable source and critical analysis. According to the findings of the study, the emergence of insurgency in the North-eastern Nigeria was discovered to have paralyzed socio-economic activities in the region and has disrupted economic development in the region. With focus on the factors responsible for the emergence and sustenance of the insurgency, the study, therefore recommended the development and implementation of proactive and pragmatic education and economic policies in the region to curtail poverty, unemployment and illiteracy in the region.
