Critical Consciousness in Shaping Political Participation of College Students in University of Mindanao

The researchers investigate the level of critical consciousness towards political participation among college students. The study involved 378 students from different departments at the University of Mindanao, selected through stratified random sampling. The researcher used descriptive-correlational quantitative research design to understand the correlations between the two variables. Statistical tools are used to analyze the data gathered: the mean, the standard deviation, and Spearman rho. The study determined that college students’ level of critical consciousness was high, while political participation was moderate. They proved strong critical motivation, critical reflection, and critical action, as well as a moderate level of knowledge-seeking political participation, influential political participation, conventional/traditional, and unconventional (non-institutional). The findings of the study provided a significant understanding of critical consciousness and political participation among college students. Overall, it emphasizes the role of youth to have essential consciousness and political and deeper awareness of societal issues, which students’ political engagement.
