Abstract

Plastic waste is an even more critical operational and environmental issue to textile and garment producers, but scarce empirical data clarifies how the concept of circularity turns into tangible waste-management results in a new industrial format. The present research analyses regulation and stakeholder pressure, circular economy practices, the ability of organisations to recycle materials, the commitment of the top management, the performance of plastic waste management, and the performance of the environment within the textile and garment industry of Bangladesh. A cross-sectional survey left 459 valid responses of managers, executives, sustainability and compliance professionals, production people. Partial least squares structural equation modelling was used to test the relationships. Findings indicate that regulatory and stakeholder pressure greatly facilitates circular economy practices whereas circular economy practices enhance recycling ability in the organisations and the performance in the plastic waste management. Recycling potential also enhances the management of plastic waste performance and moderates the impact of circular economy practices to some degree. The performance of plastic waste management augments the environmental performance. The top management commitment has a positive and the interaction effect is relatively small strengthening the relationship between circular economy practices and plastic waste management performance. The results indicate that the external pressure alone is ineffective; companies are more successful when the recycling capability of their operations and devoted managerial leadership underlies the implementation of the circular practices. The paper offers a synthesized model of enhancing plastic circularity within an export-based manufacturing industry.
