Abstract

This paper employed a systematic literature review (SLR) to examine the cultural factors that affect International Joint Ventures (IJVs) in the UAE during the period of 2000-2025. The study addresses the high multiculturalism environment of the UAE, where cultural diversity significantly affects organisational processes, performance, and innovation outcomes within IJVs. The methodology used was a systematic literature review (SLR). Thematic coding was used to analyse 19 peer-reviewed studies to determine common patterns and conceptual lessons. The analyses indicate five significant challenges: Communication barriers, Trust and relationship dynamics, Leadership and management style differences, Organisational and structural integration and Innovation and knowledge transfer Differences in language, communication style, and hierarchical norms create communication barriers that hinder effective cooperation, and the lack of alignment in leadership approach and decision-making process further increases operational inefficiency. Trust is found to be a significant determinant of collaboration, performance, and long-term stability. Furthermore, organisational structures and HR practices mediate the impact of cultural diversity on integration and knowledge sharing. Culturally diverse teams also have greater innovation potential through inclusive practices, culturally adaptive leadership, and mechanised knowledge management. The research not only advances theory but also informs practice by providing a synthesised view of the cultural issues and practical implications. The author highlights the necessity of culturally sensitive solutions, inclusive leadership, and institutionalised trust-building and knowledge transfer in IJVs. This synthesis can help managers maximise performance and promote innovation within UAE-based IJVs.
