Abstract

This study focused on the awareness and compliance of the residents of selected communities in Pikit, North Cotabato, to the provisions of Republic Act No. 9003, Ecological Solid Waste Management Act of 2000. A quantitative descriptive-correlational research design was used, which involved 392 respondents from the three barangays of Poblacion, Inug-Ug and Gli-Gli using proportional stratified random sampling. An adapted and locally modified structured questionnaire was used to collect data on awareness and compliance with waste segregation, reduce-reuse-recycle and proper waste disposal practices. Means, standard deviations, and Pearson’s product-moment correlation coefficient were used to analyze the data. The respondents showed a Very High awareness of RA 9003 (M = 4.70, SD = 0.494) and compliance with its provisions (M = 4.67, SD = 0.531). The highest awareness domain mean was obtained for segregation/separation (M = 4.74), and the lowest was for disposal (M = 4.67). For compliance, segregation/separation and reduce-reuse-recycle practices both obtained category means of 4.69, while disposal obtained the comparatively lowest mean of 4.63. A statistically significant but weak positive relationship was found between awareness and compliance (r = .296, p < .001). The findings indicate that residents who reported greater awareness also tended to report greater compliance, although the relatively weak association suggests that awareness alone does not account for differences in waste-management behavior. The study highlights the importance of combining continuing environmental education with accessible waste-management services, appropriate infrastructure, community participation, and consistent implementation of ecological solid-waste-management policies.
