Abstract

In Uganda, agriculture employs over 80% of the workforce and contributes significantly to GDP. However the industry faces persistent challenges including low productivity, climate variability, and limited access to timely agricultural information. Satellite technology has the potential of being a transformative opportunity for addressing these constraints. This study explores the possibility of integrating satellite technologies in agriculture for Uganda. An interdisciplinary methodology combining space, business and agricultural domains consisting literature review and field surveys revealed low adoption rates despite high interest among farmers. Findings underscore the role of satellite data in yield prediction, crop health monitoring, and weather indexing. Policy gaps, limited technical infrastructure, low human expertise and low awareness in Uganda are identified as key barriers. The study therefore proposes a scalable business satellite services model tailored for Uganda’s diverse agricultural stakeholders identifying key revenue streams. Strategic recommendations for improving access, policy, and stakeholder engagement to scale satellite-based agricultural services, positioning Uganda for a digitally-enabled, climate-resilient agricultural transformation are discussed.
