Protocol-Based Aesthetic Hand Care After Oncological Treatment: The Impact on Nail Condition, Body Image, and Patients’ Self-Esteem

This article closely examines the urgent issue of dermatological and nail toxicities that strike patients undergoing chemotherapy, targeted therapy, and radiation. These treatments often trigger onycholysis, severe nail brittleness, pigmentation changes, and paronychia, all of which take a heavy toll on a person’s quality of life. The main goal of this research is to gauge both the clinical and psycho-emotional benefits of introducing a standardized aesthetic hand care protocol during post-oncological recovery. We outline a structured, step-by-step approach. This involves professional assessment of the nail bed and surrounding folds, selecting cosmeceuticals rich in reparative, moisturizing, and anti-inflammatory ingredients, and teaching patients how to safely care for their hands daily. Our findings show that sticking to this protocol leads to a clear improvement in the nail plates’ physical condition, drops the rate of secondary infections, and speeds up tissue healing. We also place a major focus on the psychological side of things: restoring the appearance of the hands helps build a more positive body image, eases feelings of shame or social isolation, and significantly boosts patients’ self-esteem. Ultimately, the paper argues that oncoesthetics shouldn’t be an afterthought; it needs to be integrated into standard supportive care as a crucial part of comprehensive medical and psychological rehabilitation.
