Abstract

This study examines the decline in academic performance among lower secondary students in Bamako, Mali, focusing on motivation, discipline, well-being, and socio-economic factors. Comparing with China’s disciplined educational model, the research explores adapting such practices within Mali’s cultural and resource constraints. Using mixed methods, data from teachers, students, and administrators reveal that socio-economic issues and family support significantly affect performance, followed by motivation and study habits. Findings suggest that integrating structured discipline with emotional and socio-economic support, alongside teacher training, can foster sustainable educational improvements. A balanced, culturally adapted approach is essential for reversing academic decline in Mali.
