Abstract

TAthletic performance is influenced not only by physical training but also by psychological factors, including mental resilience and cognitive strategies. This study investigates the effectiveness of an integrated intervention combining mental resilience training with cognitive strategy development to enhance athletic performance. Sixty competitive athletes (ages 18–30) were randomly assigned to an intervention group (n = 30) or a control group (n = 30). The intervention consisted of an eight-week program incorporating stress inoculation, goal-setting, imagery, self-talk, and attentional focus, delivered three times per week. Pre- and post-intervention assessments measured psychological resilience, mental toughness, sport-specific performance, and cognitive attention. Results indicate that participants in the intervention group demonstrated significant improvements in resilience (CD-RISC: pre = 65.2 ± 7.5, post = 78.4 ± 6.8, p < .001), mental toughness (MTQ48: pre = 72.1 ± 6.1, post = 83.7 ± 5.9, p < .001), attentional focus (reaction time: pre = 450 ± 32 ms, post = 398 ± 28 ms, p < .001), and sport-specific performance metrics (e.g., 100 m sprint: pre = 12.45 ± 0.50 s, post = 11.92 ± 0.40 s, p < .001) compared to controls. Correlations showed positive associations between psychological improvements and performance gains (r = 0.62–0.78, p < .01). These findings highlight the efficacy of combining mental resilience and cognitive strategies to optimize athletic performance. The results provide evidence-based recommendations for incorporating psychological skills training alongside physical conditioning in competitive sports. Future research should explore long-term effects, multi-sport applications, and integration with physiological monitoring to further enhance intervention outcomes.
