Abstract

The exploration of groundwater in the coastal folded country should be sensitive to the texture of sediment and continuity of the confining layers. This paper assesses a 240 ft borehole in Inani Anticline region of Coxs Bazar in Bangladesh through lithological log of the borehole, 24 depth-indexed grain-size samples and consistency testing on some samples. Beds of sand are thick within the interval between about 20 to 90 ft. thin sand layers are found at depths of about 100 to 120 ft, with the log fraction varying widely, between about 8.50% and 46.02%. The sample at 170-190 ft and 220-240 ft have comparatively low pan fractions, whereas the 200 ft sample has 32.61%, indicating that the sequence at the bottom is heterogeneous. In the equation in the published values of the plastic limit, the plastic limit is greater than the value of the liquid limit, which provides nonsense positive plasticity indices; the indices produced in the consistency approach cannot be used to aid classification. The log and texture data together identify the candidate deeper sand targets, which are subject to verification by other boreholes, hydraulic tests and analysis of groundwater-quality. The work illustrates the importance of the combination of depth-resolved observations and maintaining a clear line between inferred aquifer potential and measured well performance.
