Abstract

The study aims to investigate the methods used by undergraduate students studying mathematics education to solve mathematical problems. The researcher used a survey questionnaire to carry out a quantitative study design. This survey covered a range of approaches used by the student teachers before, during, and after problem-solving. According to the study’s findings, the respondents use cognitive and metacognitive strategies when tackling mathematical problems. The organizing, elaboration, and rehearsal processes are all included in cognitive procedures. However, metacognitive abilities demonstrate that self-control and critical thinking are helpful strategies for solving mathematical problems. The methods utilized to solve mathematical problems before, during, and after determining the solution are also examined in this study. After responding to the problem-solving question, the responders used organization, elaboration, rehearsal, and critical thinking. Respondents also use monitoring and organization while addressing the issue. Moreover, in solving mathematical problems, students also apply self-control, critical thinking, and monitoring. This study’s results show that student teachers know the different strategies for solving mathematical problems. However, they find it challenging to apply in a real scenario, which results in low scores.
