Abstract

Despite the strategic importance of multipurpose cooperatives to local economies in the Global South, employee retention dynamics in this sector remain underexamined relative to those in corporate and healthcare contexts. This study examined the influence of occupational stress and organizational support on turnover intention among 409 regular, full-time employees drawn from 11 multipurpose cooperatives in Valencia City and Malaybalay City, Bukidnon, Philippines, using a quantitative, descriptive-correlational design. Composite results indicated that employees experienced slightly stressful occupational conditions, moderately supportive organizational climates, and moderately likely turnover intention. Pearson correlation analyses revealed statistically significant positive associations between turnover intention and both occupational stress and organizational support. Among sub-dimensions, workload pressure and rewards and recognition emerged as the strongest correlates of withdrawal cognition. The comparatively stronger effect of organizational support over occupational stress positions perceived organizational care, rather than stressor reduction alone, as the primary leverage point for retention in resource-constrained cooperative settings. The study contributes sector-specific empirical evidence to advance retention and sustainability frameworks for multipurpose cooperatives in the Philippines and comparable contexts in the Global South.
